Milan Mathew - Health and Safety Adviser at Woodside Energy
Woodside Health and Safety Adviser Milan Mathew has a unique career pathway in the energy industry.
Working in the oil and gas sector was never a consideration during his studies for a bachelor's degree in dental surgery in India, followed by a Master of Health Administration degree from Curtin University, but a friend suggested he apply for the Woodside Summer Internship in 2016.
He was successful and an intensive three-month oil and gas introductory course followed which enabled him to join Woodside's graduate development program, where he has been a dedicated team member for more than five years.
Milan is the Health and Safety Adviser for the Woodside Energy projects team, where he is leading and influencing the delivery of positive health and safety outcomes on various projects.
His responsibilities encompass supporting subsea tie-back projects as well as decommissioning efforts, which have been challenging and rewarding experiences.
Milan appreciates the opportunities to travel to offshore and onshore sites, including gas plants, subsea construction vessels, and drill rigs. These experiences have been especially valuable considering his non-traditional background in the oil and gas sector.
Reflecting on his achievements, Milan humbly shares a few notable milestones. One of them is successfully adapting to the oil and gas industry and upskilling in health and safety, despite lacking prior exposure to either field.
He takes pride in completing his dental surgery degree, an accomplishment he once doubted.
He also participated in a cycling tour in South Africa, covering approximately 200 kilometres, as part of a fundraising initiative for burns victims.
And he celebrates becoming a permanent resident of Australia, a journey that tested his perseverance.
Milan draws motivation and inspiration from his incredible family, who encourage him to continually strive for self-improvement. Professionally, he finds motivation in seeking challenges, being proactive, and engaging in meaningful work.
Outside of work, Milan indulges in various interests and activities. He has a deep passion for movies and enjoys discussing trivia. He and his wife embark on adventurous hiking journeys, particularly in the Stirling Ranges. They also engage in charitable endeavours, participating in events such as the MSWA stair climb and the HBF Run for a Reason.
As a member of Energy Club WA, Milan highly values networking events, especially those tailored to support university students.
He finds immense fulfilment in mentoring students during pre-networking event coaching sessions and providing them support throughout the event.
Milan admires the students' abilities and appreciates the opportunity to help them overcome their initial jitters, having experienced similar feelings during his student years.
Milan Mathew's unconventional career path, dedication to health and safety, and passion for personal and professional growth make him a valuable member of the
energy industry.
His diverse experiences and commitment to supporting others reflect his enthusiasm for making a positive impact.
