The Energy Club of WA (ECWA) celebrated excellence in the energy sector at its annual Awards Night, Friday 17 October, which this year was combined with the prestigious Industry Gala Ball and co-hosted with the Society of Petroleum Engineers WA.
The evening brought together industry leaders, innovators, and emerging talent for a night of recognition and celebration.
Members enjoyed fine dining, entertainment and networking opportunities before the spotlight turned to the awards ceremony. Each award reflected the values driving the industry forward: sustainability, inclusion, safety, and excellence.
Leading the charge toward a net-zero future, Rosie Johnstone, Chair of CCUS Network Australia, received the Sustainability & Net-Zero Leadership Award for her pivotal role in establishing the Carbon Capture and Storage Network Australia. Rosie has united storage providers, transport companies, and emitters to accelerate decarbonisation, influenced WA legislation for GHG storage, and championed CCUS as a critical pathway to net-zero.
The Energy Inclusion Award, sponsored by CMEWA, went to the AGIG Reconciliation Working Group, represented by Owen Sharpe, for its groundbreaking First Nations Web Map initiative. Developed with Indigenous-owned consultancy Winyama, this interactive tool embeds cultural recognition into operational processes, enabling staff to understand
and acknowledge Traditional Custodians across AGIG’s footprint.
Innovation was front and centre as Steven Kunz, Executive Director of Safe Isolation Australia (a JSP Company), claimed the Industry Game Changer Award, sponsored by ExxonMobil, for introducing Valvetight’s DBB-SAVER technology to Australia. This innovation has revolutionised valve isolation practices in LNG operations, reducing hazardous conditions, reducing emissions, and enabling maintenance without plant shutdowns.
On the frontline, Richard Taylor, HSE Manager at SLB, earned the Field Team Excellence Award, sponsored by Monadelphous, for his leadership in implementing the Live Well program and pioneering safety technologies, including hydration monitoring and AI-powered forklift safety systems. These initiatives have delivered measurable outcomes - zero heat stress cases, early medical interventions, and improved psychosocial safety.
The prestigious Brooke Arnot Excellence Award, which recognises young professionals sponsored by INPEX, was presented to Alex Morrison, Consultant at Deloitte, for his outstanding leadership and impact in the energy sector. From advancing AI methodologies at Deloitte to promoting net-zero initiatives through Engineers Australia, Alex exemplifies innovation, continuous learning, and commitment to developing future talent.
Finally, recognising dedication to the Club itself, Farhad Mobarra, Associate at TBH, was named ECWA Member of the Year, sponsored by Wood, for his exceptional contribution to ECWA and the broader energy community. A mentor and advocate for diversity, Farhad has strengthened industry connections, championed inclusion, and inspired emerging professionals through his leadership and outreach.
The combined Gala Ball and Awards Night was a true celebration of innovation, collaboration, and progress within Western Australia’s energy industry. ECWA extends its gratitude to all sponsors, members, and attendees for making this event a success.
